This guide explains how to boost browser performance by making sure your computer’s dedicated graphics card (GPU) is being used, which is especially important for tools like cmBuilder.
Why It Matters
If your browser isn't using your GPU, cmBuilder will run slowly, like pedaling an electric bike with the battery turned off.
We strongly recommend enabling your GPU when using cmBuilder.
Signs That Your GPU Isn’t Being Used
- cmBuilder shows GPU tier as 0, 1, or 2.
- GPU name says "internal" or includes "Intel" (Some Intel GPUs are okay, but often this means your dedicated GPU isn’t being used.)
- cmBuilder feels slow or laggy.
How to Enable your Dedicated GPU on Windows 11
đź’ˇ Note: The steps below help you switch from an integrated to a dedicated GPU. If your CPU is doing the rendering, you'll want to read a different guide:Â Enabling Hardware AccelerationÂ
- Click the Start button
- Open Settings
- Go to SystemÂ
- Open Display
- Scroll down and click Graphics
- Under Custom settings for applications, select Add Desktop app
- Find and select your browser:
Chrome: C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
Edge: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe
💡 Note: We recommend Chrome, but Edge and Safari are also supported. Other browsers may work, but haven’t been tested as thoroughly.
- Once added, click the browser entry
- Under GPU preference, click on the drop-down and select High Performance (this will use your dedicated GPU).
- Â Close the settings and restart your browser (close all browser windows)
When you return to cmBuilder, you should now see a different GPU name and a higher GPU tier reported.
