Fixing the problem - most likely case
It is unlikely that a setting is actually turned off (though we have solutions for that below). It is more likely that your GPU has crashed in some way. This could be from being overloaded, or possibly from plugging-in/unplugging a monitor.
Because of this, the first thing to try out is to restart your browser, and if that doesn't work, restart your computer.
If you are still getting the warning, then it could be a setting that needs changing. Continue reading below if you want to investigate this.
Quick tangent
Once you have enabled hardware acceleration, you still may have an issue of using your Integrated GPU when you have a Dedicated GPU available. We have instructions on how to resolve that: Edit Browser GPU Settings.
Enable Hardware Acceleration - Chrome
-
Navigate to the hardware acceleration setting
- chrome://settings/system
- Option 1: Paste this URL in your address bar and press enter (chrome does not let it work as a hyperlink)..
- Option 2: Go to Chrome settings, and navigate to System.
Â
Â
2. Turn on "Use hardware acceleration when available", and then press Relaunch.
- Note that Relaunch will refresh all browser pages you have open - make sure you have saved all of your work!
Â
3. Your hardware acceleration is now activated! Enjoy!
But what if it is still not working in cmBuilder?
Note that the setting above has the caveat "when available". Sometimes hardware acceleration is not available. You may need to force chrome a bit harder, the next section will explain how to do this.
Force Chrome to enable hardware acceleration (if it is dragging its butt).
- Paste this URL in your address bar and press enter (chrome does not let it work as a hyperlink).
- chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist
- Set "Override software rendering list" to "Enabled".
- Press Relaunch in the bottom right.
- Note that Relaunch will refresh all browser pages you have open - make sure you have saved all of your work!
Further Details
Different computers have different ways of handling graphics. Most computers have either a Dedicated GPU or an Integrated GPU or both. Here are the 3 rendering options that computers have, ordered from best to worst performance:
